Maureen Berry, TCRG - Owner / Director

Maureen Berry, BFA, TCRG is the Owner/Director of Teelin School of Irish Dance and Director of Teelin Irish Dance Company. She was awarded her TCRG teaching certification by An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha (the Irish Dancing Commission, in Dublin, Ireland) in 2001, and has been an active member of the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America (IDTANA) since that time.

Maureen is the top recipient of the 2009 Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) Individual Artist Award for Dance Choreography.

Maureen’s extensive dance training ranges from modern, ballet, salsa, tap & jazz to traditional Appalachian clogging and Irish step dance. She grew up in New Jersey within the highly competitive world of Irish step dancing, became a champion Irish dancer at a young age, and competed at the World Championships in Ireland.

Also musically inclined, Maureen learned button accordion from her late father, Michael Berry, and competed in the All Ireland championships for Irish music. (Maureen is currently on a mission to make the accordion a “cool” instrument!)

At the age of 16, Maureen began studying Ballet, Jazz, Tap & Modern dance at a Performing Arts High School, and then went on to receive her B.F.A. degree in Dance Performance from Towson University. Maureen joined Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble as a full time performer in June 1997 and toured all over the world.

In 2007, Maureen choreographed and performed in a John Paul Jones music video for the music group Uncle Earl. The video has won multiple awards from Country Music Television (CMT).

In 2014, Maureen received her 200 hour teacher training certification from Sid Yoga, a Baron Baptiste affiliate.

Maureen is currently focusing her energy on teaching and directing. Highlights of her career include producing, choreographing and starring in the highly successful original productions of feature-length stage shows: Portraits of Ireland(2006-2011), StepDance (2012-2013), Sláinte (2014), and Celtic Storm (2016-present). Kathleen Young, TCRG - Owner / Business Manager

Kathleen Young, TCRG, is the Co-Owner/Business Manager of Teelin. She was awarded her TCRG teaching certification by An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha (the Irish Dancing Commission, in Dublin, Ireland) in 2009, and has been an active member of the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America (IDTANA) since that time.

Kathleen was born and raised in New Jersey with her two sisters, Eileen and Maureen. She has been an associated with Teelin School of Irish Dance since moving to Maryland in 1998 and currently lives in Perry Hall with her husband and their two sons.

Kathleen studied Irish dance with her sisters at the Peter Smith School of Irish Dance in New Jersey for 10 years and competed nationally as an Open Champion. She also competed in the button accordion and tin whistle for many years.

In addition to her family and her work for Teelin, Kathleen works full time as a Senior Center Director for Baltimore County Department of Aging, and has been a senior administrator with Baltimore County Government since 1998. She graduated with honors from Stockton College with a B.S. in Public Health and a Certificate in Gerontology.


Whitney Hanson, TCRG

Whitney Hanson, TCRG, was awarded her teaching certification by An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha in 2016, and has been an active member of the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America (IDTANA) since that time. She joined the Teelin School of Irish Dance in 2014.

Whitney started dancing at age 15, and has competed as an Open Champion at both the National and World level. Outside of dance, Whitney works as a pharmacist at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She graduated with high honors from University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 2010 with her Doctorate in Pharmacy. In her free time, she enjoys playing piano and both 5-string and tenor banjo with her dad.


Shawn Stratmann, TMRF

Shawn Stratmann, TMRF earned certification by An Coimisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha in 2012 after studying under Maureen Berry and the Teelin School for six years. Shawn has several roles at Teelin, including Co-Teacher in the figures class, Assistant Teacher in the Champ Program, Champ Program Coordinator, and Co-photographer. A University of Maryland graduate, Shawn has had a 20-year career in the creative and marketing industries and currently works full time as a photographer.



Michael Pat Gallagher, ADCRG

Michael Pat Gallagher, ADCRG visits Teelin School two times a year to teach workshops, and he also works closely with Maureen throughout the year to develop Teelin’s step choreography. Michael Pat is a two-time World Champion, five-time All Irelands Champion, and former lead male dancer in Riverdance. During his 7 year career with Riverdance, Michael Pat danced over 1200 lead performances, the most given by any male principal in the history of the show. Born and raised in Donegal, Ireland, Michael Pat now lives and runs his own Irish dancing school in Phoenix, Arizona, and he enjoys traveling the world.


Gayle Shields, TMRF

Gayle Shields earned TMRF certification by An Coimisiun Le Rinci Gaelacha in 2014, and teaches in the Teelin Champion Program. Although Gayle has recently moved to Pennsylvania, she is still a valuable member of the Champ Team! Gayle offers workshops and private lessons on select weekends throughout the year for the champ program. She has a wealth of dance and exercise experience, and has a passion for technique and beautifully pointed feet. Gayle is also an internationally qualified Highland dancing adjudicator and Highland dance teacher. Outside of Irish dance, Gayle works full-time as Vice President of Pharmacy for Ahold USA.

Emily Ferry

Emily Ferry started dancing while studying abroad at the University of Limerick in Ireland. She competes at the Open Championship level, and was member of the Teelin Irish Dance Company for several years. She has been an assistant at Teelin since 2008 for Adult Classes. Emily graduated magna cum laude with honors in Computer Science from Colgate University and works full time as a software developer for Novetta Solutions.


Abby Lyons

Abby Lyons is a long-time Teelin dancer who competed as an Open Champion and was an original member of the Teelin Irish Dance Company. Abby is a full-time student in the University of Maryland Nursing Program, and an assistant teacher for Teelin School.
